Legend Reborn: Gordon Murray’s S1 LM Rolls Out at Monterey Car Week

A Masterpiece Returns

At Monterey Car Week 2025, automotive legend Gordon Murray Special Vehicles (GMSV) unveiled its very first creations in the US debut: the bespoke S1 LM and the track-honed Le Mans GTR, both tributes to his iconic motorsport history.

Though both left enthusiasts breathless, all eyes were on the S1 LM—a modern salute to the 1995 McLaren F1 GTR that conquered Le Mans. Only five road-legal units have been commissioned, each a tailor-made marvel.

Engineering Elegance: Inside the S1 LM

At its heart, the S1 LM is powered by a bespoke 4.3-liter Cosworth V12, re-engineered from the T.50’s unit, revving aggressively up to 12,100 rpm with jaw-dropping output north of 690–700 hp. The engine sings through a six-speed manual gearbox, utilizing lightweight components and calibrated ratios that deliver shifts as crisp as a rifle bolt.

The body comprises sculpted carbon-fibre panels, a lowered roofline, and precision-designed aero—think front splitter, rear diffuser, and dual-element wing that give it that F1 GTR silhouette with modern flair. An Inconel exhaust wrapped in gold foil adds both function and vintage indulgence.

Track-Inspired Twin: The Le Mans GTR

For those craving raw performance, the Le Mans GTR takes the throne. With a longtail body, massive rear wing, deeper splitter, and race-ready aerodynamics, it’s built for speed and stability—homage to endurance legends like the Matra-Simca MS660 and Porsche 917.

Under the hood sits the same high-revving V12, matched with a manual box and stripped-back interior for pure driving immersion. Only 24 units will be made—each representing an hour of the 24-hour race. And yes, they’ve reportedly all found their owners.

Why This Matters

Category What Sets It Apart
Heritage & Innovation These cars merge the DNA of the McLaren F1 with new precision.
Exclusivity Commission-only S1 LM & sold-out 24-unit GTR—this isn’t for everyone.
Purist Focus Manual gearboxes, analog interfaces, aerodynamic mastery.

These unveilings reinforce Murray’s belief that performance and beauty shouldn’t be sacrificed for novelty. Design isn’t just about flash—it’s about timeless proportion and engineering clarity.

SundayFunday Verdict

This isn’t just a car launch—it’s a legacy reimagined. Gordon Murray has handed us two nearly mythical creations that celebrate past triumphs while boldly navigating the road ahead. For enthusiasts and dreamers alike, the S1 LM and Le Mans GTR are proof that true innovation still revs the heart—and the engine.
